Manchester City 0-1 Brighton: Ayari scores and Verbruggen makes seven saves in Brighton's first win at the Etihad
Yasin Ayari scored in the 11th minute and Bart Verbruggen kept City out, four days after Brighton lost a Carabao Cup shoot-out at the same ground. City have lost two Premier League games in a row for the first time under Enzo Maresca.
Brighton beat Manchester City 1-0 at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday 31 October, the first time they have won at the ground, Sky Sports reported. The sides had met there four days earlier, when City won a Carabao Cup tie on penalties.
Yasin Ayari scored in the 11th minute, steering the ball past Gianluigi Donnarumma after Matheus Nunes failed to clear, according to Sky Sports and The Guardian. Maxim De Cuyper shot over the bar from Diego Gómez’s cross in the 48th minute.
City pressed for an equaliser in the second half. Iliman Ndiaye hit the crossbar in the 52nd minute, and Bart Verbruggen saved from Nunes and, in stoppage time, Jérémy Doku. Sky Sports said Verbruggen made seven saves.
“We created enough to get some points but we didn’t score,” City manager Enzo Maresca told Sky Sports. “We are conceding silly goals; we can avoid that.”
“Defence wins you tight games. We had a defensive mindset,” Brighton head coach Fabian Hürzeler said.
Sky Sports said it was the first time City had lost consecutive Premier League games under Maresca, a week after their defeat at Aston Villa. Brighton are third, two points behind City and Arsenal, who both have 21 points; Arsenal play Liverpool on Sunday, according to BBC Sport.
