City twice come from behind

Malick Yalcouye gave Brighton the lead after 30 minutes and Mateo Kovačić equalised before half-time, PA reported. Georginio Rutter put Brighton back in front and later hit the bar, before Vitor Reis diverted a Rayan Cherki free kick into the net to take the tie to penalties.

Rulli decides the shoot-out

Both sides scored their first three penalties before Jason Steele saved from Kovačić, according to RTÉ. City’s back-up goalkeeper Gerónimo Rulli then saved from Yasin Ayari and Lewis Dunk to send City through.

City manager Enzo Maresca made nine changes from the side beaten at Aston Villa on Saturday, The Independent reported, with Erling Haaland, Gianluigi Donnarumma, Rúben Dias, Elliot Anderson and Joško Gvardiol not involved. Brighton also rotated heavily.

City host League One side Bradford City in the quarter-finals, in the week beginning 14 December.
