Liverpool 1-1 Chelsea: Liverpool win 6-5 on penalties to reach Carabao Cup quarter-finals

Liverpool beat Chelsea 6-5 on penalties after a 1-1 draw at Anfield on Wednesday to reach the Carabao Cup quarter-finals, according to Liverpool FC and Sky Sports.

Two penalties before half-time

Both goals came from the spot late in the first half. Morgan Rogers put Chelsea ahead in the 40th minute after Ryan Gravenberch fouled Moisés Caicedo, and Cody Gakpo equalised three minutes later after Wesley Fofana handled a corner, The Guardian and Sky Sports reported.

After the break Chelsea goalkeeper Mike Penders saved from Ronald Araujo and Bradley Barcola, while Giorgi Mamardashvili denied Rogers and Marco Palestra, Sky Sports said. Chelsea lost defender Maxence Lacroix to an apparent hamstring injury in the first half, according to Sky Sports.

The shoot-out

Valentin Barco hit the post and Mamardashvili saved from debutant Emmanuel Emegha for Chelsea, while Penders saved from Gravenberch and Kostas Tsimikas shot over for Liverpool, Sky Sports reported. With both sides on five from seven, Joe Gomez scored and Fofana sent his kick over the bar, Liverpool FC said. The attendance was 60,214.

Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola started Trey Nyoni, Rio Ngumoha, James McConnell and Lewis Koumas. “I think they deserved the right to play,” he told Sky Sports. Chelsea boss Xabi Alonso told Sky Sports: “We saw a proper cup game, intense and really close.”

Liverpool host Bournemouth in the quarter-finals in the week beginning 14 December.
