Trump says he will respect midterm results 'if they're honest elections' and points to his veto if Democrats win Congress
Speaking at Joint Base Andrews on Tuesday before rallies in Texas, President Donald Trump said he would accept next week's midterm results if the elections were honest, and said he would use his 'strong veto' and make deals if Democrats took control of Congress.
US President Donald Trump said on Tuesday 27 October that he would respect the results of the 3 November midterm elections “if they’re honest elections”, AFP and The Hill reported.
“I will, if they’re honest elections,” Trump told reporters at Joint Base Andrews near Washington when asked whether he would accept the results, as he left for campaign events in Texas.
Asked how he would work with Congress if Republicans lost control of the House of Representatives or the Senate, Trump said: “We’ll figure a way. Look, I have strong veto. I hope that that won’t be the case, but if it is, that’s happened before with many presidents. You have strong veto, and you end up working on deals.”
On Monday, Trump offered a $1 million reward for information leading to convictions for voter fraud, AFP reported. Trump has repeatedly said there was widespread fraud in the 2020 presidential election, which he lost to Joe Biden; courts rejected those claims.
The Texas trip
Trump scheduled rallies in Corpus Christi and Lubbock for Republican Senate candidate Ken Paxton, who faces Democrat James Talarico in what NBC News and USA Today describe as a close race. Republicans hold the Senate 53-47. AP reported that Secretary of State Marco Rubio would join Trump in Texas to show a tanker carrying Venezuelan crude oil; Trump described the cargo of about one million barrels as a “gift” from Venezuela, AFP reported.
Vice President JD Vance was campaigning in Michigan for Republican Senate candidate Mike Rogers, NBC News reported.
