Local ceasefire around Oleshky takes effect as Russia strikes Kyiv; Zelensky says 16 ballistic missiles and 280 drones were launched overnight

A US-brokered pause in fighting in the Kherson sector began at 01:00 GMT on Tuesday to allow aid into Russian-occupied Oleshky. Hours earlier, Russian strikes on Kyiv killed one person and damaged medical facilities and the Southern Bridge, Ukrainian officials said.

A localised ceasefire in Ukraine’s Kherson region took effect at 01:00 GMT on Tuesday 27 October, according to the Russian Ministry of Defence, to allow a humanitarian mission into the Russian-occupied town of Oleshky, Al Jazeera reported. The pause was brokered by US First Lady Melania Trump and is due to last through Saturday, CNBC reported.

Up to 2,000 people remain in Oleshky, according to the United Nations. Matthias Schmale, the UN humanitarian coordinator in Ukraine, said civilians were trapped “without a guaranteed safe exit route”. Negotiators said doctors, medicines, food and water would be brought in before evacuation corridors open, Al Jazeera reported. The Guardian reported that no side had said who would monitor the truce.

Strikes on Kyiv

Hours before the ceasefire began, Russian strikes on Kyiv killed one person and wounded eight, Mayor Vitali Klitschko said, adding that medical facilities, including an intensive care unit, were damaged. He said a strike also hit the Southern Bridge over the Dnipro, damaging metro infrastructure; train services across it were suspended.

President Volodymyr Zelensky said Russia launched 16 ballistic missiles and 280 drones overnight, mainly at energy, logistics and urban infrastructure. “Russia is constantly taking new steps toward escalation,” he said. Russia’s defence ministry said its forces struck a vessel in the Black Sea carrying cargo for Ukraine’s military, Russian media reported.

US angle

Zelensky said Ukraine had been waiting “nearly a month” for US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to sign off on missiles for Patriot and NASAMS air defence systems. Russia, Ukraine and the US plan new talks in Abu Dhabi in November.
