Trump says he has spent, or will spend, more than $400 million to help Republicans in the midterms

US President Donald Trump said in a post on Truth Social at 5:09pm GMT on Tuesday 20 October (1:09pm Tuesday US Eastern time) that he will have spent more than $400 million to help Republicans by the 3 November midterm elections.

“Because of my belief in the Republican Party, and all of our Policies and Principles, and especially after witnessing what is taking place in France, and other locations throughout Europe, I am pleased to announce that, having to do with the Most Important Midterm Elections in our Country’s History, I have spent, or will be spending, over 400 Million Dollars by Election Day.” Donald J. He added: “More than 300 Million Dollars has already been spent on Advertising, Direct and Indirect Voter Contact, Rallies, Rally Arenas, Telerallies, Get Out the Vote Programs, Election Integrity, and more.”

Forbes reported that Trump did not say whether the money was his own or from allied super PACs. In September he said he would allocate $400 million to $500 million from his super PAC, MAGA Inc., CNBC reported. CNBC said Federal Election Commission filings as of Tuesday afternoon US time showed roughly $200 million in identifiable spending and ad reservations tied to his political operation.

The post came shortly after The New York Times reported that former New York mayor Michael Bloomberg was sending about $80 million to Democrats in September and October, Reuters and CNBC said. Bloomberg “is of the view that resources matter in campaigns,” his adviser Howard Wolfson told the Times.
