Russian strikes resume in Kherson after six-day Oleshky ceasefire ends; Kyiv says Moscow used the pause to reinforce
Ukrainian officials in Kherson said Russian drones and strikes hit the city on Monday, hours after a six-day humanitarian ceasefire around occupied Oleshky expired. Ukraine's General Staff said Russian forces used the truce to rotate units and bring in ammunition; the Kremlin said Ukraine had likely regrouped too.
Russian strikes resumed in Ukraine’s Kherson region on Monday 2 November, hours after a six-day humanitarian ceasefire around the Russian-occupied town of Oleshky expired at about 9pm GMT on Sunday, Ukrainian officials said.
Neither side’s battlefield claims can be independently confirmed.
Kherson’s regional administration said a 62-year-old woman and a 73-year-old man were hospitalised after a Russian drone hit their car, and local authorities said a medical facility in the city centre was struck, the BBC and AP reported.
Rival accounts of the truce
Ukraine’s General Staff said Russian forces used the “regime of silence” to rotate units, strengthen positions, expand anti-drone netting on roads and deliver ammunition. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said it was “reasonable to assume” Ukraine’s army had also regrouped, calling it “a completely standard practice”, and said there were “no similar plans or initiatives” for further truces, according to the BBC.
Ukraine’s human rights ombudsman Dmytro Lubinets said Russian vehicles filmed during the pause were marked with red crosses and used for demining under Ukrainian supervision, the Kyiv Independent reported.
Background
The ceasefire ran from 27 October to 1 November to allow aid deliveries and evacuations from Oleshky, and neither side reported violations while it lasted. US first lady Melania Trump, whom both Kyiv and Moscow thanked for brokering it, said on 2 November that nearly 800 people had been evacuated. Kherson’s regional administration separately said 180 people, including 23 children, were evacuated from riverside communities and Kherson city, AP reported.
Elsewhere, emergency services said drone strikes injured 12 people in the Kharkiv region and five in Odesa, while Russia’s Defence Ministry said it shot down 212 Ukrainian drones overnight, AP reported.
