Iranian delegation leaves Qatar after three days of talks as Araghchi warns any attack would meet a 'more bitter' response
An Iranian delegation left Qatar on Sunday after three days of indirect talks on ending the war with the United States, with a draft proposal circulated for feedback, AP reported. Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said negotiations were 'proceeding very intensively' but warned of a 'more bitter and forceful' response to any new military operation.
An Iranian delegation left Qatar on Sunday 1 November after three consecutive days of indirect talks with Qatari mediators on a deal to end the war with the United States, a regional official briefed on the talks told AP. A draft proposal has been circulated for feedback and a follow-up meeting is under discussion, the official said.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said on Monday that negotiations through mediators were “proceeding very intensively” but that “everything depends on Washington’s political rationality”, Iran’s state news agency IRNA reported, as cited by CBS News. “If they choose honest diplomacy, we are ready to engage,” he said. “If they intend to deceive us and launch military operations, they will face a response more bitter and forceful than before.” IRNA said he repeated that Tehran would not back down from its conditions.
Israel and the US
Axios, citing one Israeli and one US source, reported that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu pressed President Donald Trump in a phone call on Saturday to strike Iran immediately after Tuesday’s US midterm elections, while Trump wants to let negotiations play out. The White House and Netanyahu’s office declined to comment, Axios said. Trump told reporters on Sunday he had “a very good talk” with Netanyahu about Iran, without giving details.
Separately, Iran’s Supreme National Security Council secretary Mohsen Rezaei spoke by phone with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday about “strategic cooperation” and thanked him for Russia’s support, Iran’s Tasnim news agency reported, according to CBS News.
Background
The war began with joint US and Israeli strikes on Iran on 28 February. Iran’s conditions for a deal include the release of frozen assets, the lifting of the US naval blockade and an end to fighting on all fronts, in exchange for a phased reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, CBS News reported.
