Bayern Munich said their head coach collapsed while watching a reserve-team session on Friday. Sporting director Max Eberl said on Saturday that Kompany is stable, and assistant Aaron Danks takes charge at Freiburg.
Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany is in hospital after collapsing during a reserve-team training session on Friday 23 October, the club said. On Saturday, sporting director Max Eberl said Kompany was stable but would be out for weeks.
What Bayern said on Friday
In a statement published on Friday evening (4:36pm GMT), Bayern said Kompany “required medical attention after collapsing during an FC Bayern reserve team training session on Friday”. The first-team head coach had been watching the second team train.
The club said Kompany was “undergoing thorough examinations in hospital and will remain under medical care”, and that his coaching staff would oversee training and match activities until further notice.
Vincent Kompany’s health is our top priority. We at FC Bayern will do everything we can to ensure he makes a speedy recovery. Vinnie is receiving all the necessary medical care and support, and all the time he needs. Max Eberl, Bayern sporting director, in the club statement

At Bayern’s press conference before Sunday’s game at Freiburg, Eberl said: “The good news: he is stable.” He said he had spoken to Kompany and his wife on Friday evening, AP and AFP reported.
Eberl said examinations were continuing. “The tests have already yielded some results, but further results are needed to determine exactly what it is and how long it will take for him to recover,” he said, according to AP.
Vinnie will be given all the time he needs. We’re not starting to put together any timeframes… We won’t be talking about days, but weeks. We need to all be clear on that. Max Eberl, quoted by AFP
The BBC had reported that Kompany, 40, missed Bayern’s news conference on Tuesday because of a virus but was on the touchline for Wednesday’s 2-2 draw with Arsenal in the Champions League. Bayern’s reserve-team game was postponed after Kompany collapsed, but Eberl said the club did not consider trying to postpone the Freiburg game, AFP reported.
Who takes charge
Assistant coach Aaron Danks will lead the team at Freiburg on Sunday (4:30pm GMT), AFP reported. Danks said he had spoken to Kompany briefly on Friday, only to wish him well.
It was just checking in on his health and making sure he’s OK. All the football operations are in our hands and we’ll work together as a team to keep the club moving forward. Aaron Danks, Bayern assistant coach, quoted by AFP
Bayern went into the weekend top of the Bundesliga with 14 points from six games. Dortmund moved above them on Saturday with a 1-0 win over Eintracht Frankfurt. Bayern have not given a date for Kompany’s return.
