US midterms: Americans vote on Tuesday for all 435 House seats and 35 Senate seats after more than 56 million early ballots

Voters across the United States go to the polls on Tuesday 3 November in midterm elections that will decide control of Congress for the last two years of President Donald Trump’s term. All 435 seats in the House of Representatives and 35 Senate seats are on the ballot, RTÉ reported, along with state races including governorships in states such as Ohio and New York, according to NBC News.

Early vote, as of 17:00 GMT Monday 2 November: NBC News’s tracker counted 56,144,276 mail-in and early in-person votes nationally, about 24.2 million by mail and 31.9 million in person, with 61,053,896 mail ballots requested or sent. The University of Florida Election Lab had counted 54.51 million early votes in its update at 12:20 GMT on Monday. CBS News, citing the Election Lab, reported that more than 54 million Americans had voted early.

In 2022, about 56.6 million early ballots were cast in total, according to the On Point Politics tracker. Party registration figures show who has voted, not how they voted, the trackers note.

On the final day of campaigning, Trump held tele-rallies and was scheduled to speak at the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool in Washington, a White House official told NBC News. Vice President JD Vance held rallies in New York and Ohio. Trump held the last of 28 in-person rallies since 1 October in Salina, Kansas, on Sunday night, NBC reported.
