Saudi-led coalition says it struck Houthi 'vital resources' and intercepted a missile and drone; Houthis say strikes hit a medical school

The Saudi-led coalition said it carried out a 'precision military operation' on Sunday against resources it said the Houthis use for missiles and drones, and later intercepted a Houthi ballistic missile and a drone fired toward southern Saudi Arabia. The Houthis accused Saudi Arabia of two airstrikes on a medical school in Hodeidah.

Neither side’s claims can be independently confirmed.

The Saudi-led coalition in Yemen said it carried out a “precision military operation” on the morning of Sunday 1 November to “neutralize vital resources” it said the Houthis use for their ballistic missile and drone programmes. Coalition spokesman Major General Turki al-Maliki said in a statement carried by the Saudi Press Agency at 1:48pm GMT that the strikes followed continued Houthi attacks on “civilians and civilian objects in Yemen and Saudi Arabia”. Gulf News reported the operation targeted sites in Hodeidah and Dhamar provinces.

Hours later, al-Maliki said on X that air defences intercepted a ballistic missile and a drone launched by the Houthis toward southern Saudi Arabia. Saudi authorities issued emergency warnings in Abha and Khamis Mushait before saying the danger had passed, Anadolu reported. No casualties or damage were reported.

The Houthis accused Saudi Arabia of two airstrikes on the medical school of Hodeidah University. There was no immediate information on casualties.

Background: The Houthis, who are aligned with Iran, control Yemen’s capital Sanaa and much of the north. The Saudi-led coalition backs Yemen’s internationally recognised government. Saudi Arabia has faced repeated Houthi missile and drone attacks in recent weeks, Anadolu reported. For the Houthis’ earlier claims, see our earlier report.
