Iran's Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei says Tehran's conditions must be met to end the war with the US
Meeting the head of Iran's Supreme National Security Council on Tuesday, Mojtaba Khamenei called for the conditions set by Iranian officials for ending the conflict to be fulfilled, and stressed managing the Strait of Hormuz, according to an official statement.
Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei called on Tuesday 27 October for the conditions set by Iranian officials for ending the war with the United States to be met, according to an official statement reported by Anadolu Agency.
Khamenei spoke at a meeting with Mohsen Rezaei, head of the Supreme National Security Council, who briefed him on the country’s security situation. According to the statement, Khamenei stressed the need to safeguard the rights and interests of the Iranian people and of what Tehran calls the “resistance front” by fulfilling those conditions. He also stressed protecting national and regional security “through managing” the Strait of Hormuz and strengthening relations with neighbouring countries. The statement did not list the conditions.
On Sunday, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said a resumption of war would not change Iran’s positions and that management of the Strait of Hormuz “will no longer be the same”, Al Arabiya reported. On Tuesday, Iran said an oil tanker caught fire after hitting mines east of the Strait of Hormuz, Al Jazeera reported.
Background
The United States and Israel began military strikes on Iran on 28 February. A US-Iran ceasefire on 8 April ended the most intense fighting, apart from sporadic exchanges around the Strait of Hormuz. Iran claims control of the strait, and the US maintains a naval counter-blockade of Iranian ports. A memorandum of understanding agreed in June later unravelled, with each side accusing the other of violations. President Donald Trump said on Friday 23 October that Washington “may do another little Epic Fury”, referring to the US-Israeli campaign, Al Arabiya reported.
