Inter 1-0 Shakhtar Donetsk: Carlos Augusto scores after Bastoni red card for first Champions League win of the season

Inter beat Shakhtar Donetsk 1-0 at San Siro on Wednesday night for their first win of this season’s Champions League. Inter had lost their first two league phase games, to Real Madrid and Club Brugge, Football Italia reported.

How it went

Alessandro Bastoni was shown two yellow cards in about two minutes, at 66 and 68 minutes, both after tussles with Shakhtar players, Football Italia reported. Nine minutes later, substitute Henrikh Mkhitaryan, a former Shakhtar player, played a long pass from the centre circle and Carlos Augusto chested it down and scored past goalkeeper Dmytro Riznyk.

Shakhtar had spells of control, according to UEFA. Inter goalkeeper Josep Martínez made a double save late on, from Newerton and Mykola Matviyenko, Football Italia said. Shakhtar’s Pedrinho went off injured in the first half. Inter were without Lautaro Martínez, Curtis Jones, John Stones and Benjamin Pavard through injury, according to Football Italia.

UEFA named Carlos Augusto player of the match and said Shakhtar have still never beaten Inter.

Inter coach Cristian Chivu said Bastoni had been “provoked” and was “naive”, FC Inter 1908 reported.

Standings

Inter have three points from three games and Shakhtar four, according to BBC Sport’s table. Inter play AC Milan in Serie A this weekend, Football Italia said.
