Academy Museum Gala honours Charlize Theron, John Carpenter and Colman Domingo; Taylor Swift closes the night

The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures held its sixth annual gala in Los Angeles on Saturday night (US time), honouring actor Charlize Theron, director John Carpenter and actor Colman Domingo.

Theron received the Icon Award, which the museum says celebrates an artist whose career has had a significant global impact. Carpenter, director of “Halloween”, received the Luminary Award, given for contributions that have expanded the creative possibilities of filmmaking. Domingo received the Vantage Award, which honours an artist helping to challenge dominant narratives around cinema, Variety reported when the honourees were announced in August.

Taylor Swift, whom the museum had announced as the evening’s performer, closed the night, The Age reported. The gala is not televised.

Guests on the red carpet included Swift, Theron and Domingo as well as Jacob Elordi, Kylie Minogue, Sabrina Carpenter, Andrew Garfield, Kate Hudson, Pamela Anderson and Teyana Taylor, according to The Age and Vogue.

The gala, presented by Rolex and co-chaired by Robert Rodriguez, Steven Spielberg and Kate Capshaw, raises money for the museum’s exhibitions, screenings and education programmes. “The Academy Museum Gala is a celebration of the artists and storytellers whose work continues to shape the cultural impact of cinema around the world,” museum director and president Amy Homma said in August.
