Russia launches 433 drones at Ukraine overnight; Zelensky says hundreds of thousands of families without power

Ukraine's air force said Russia launched 433 drones overnight into Sunday and that 371 were shot down or suppressed. Regional officials said Russian attacks killed one person and injured at least 47 over the past day, and President Volodymyr Zelensky called on allies to speed up air defence deliveries.

Neither side’s claims about the attacks can be independently confirmed.

Russia launched 433 drones at Ukraine overnight into Sunday 1 November, including 64 jet-powered Shahed-type drones, Ukraine’s air force said. It said 371 were shot down or suppressed as of 5:30am GMT, with hits recorded at 16 locations and debris falling at 14.

President Volodymyr Zelensky said Russia hit power infrastructure in four regions, and that “hundreds of thousands of families remain without electricity”. He said Russia was seeking to “maximally exploit the deficit of ballistic missile interceptors” and urged allies to act: “decisions regarding air defense must be implemented now.”

Regional officials said Russian attacks over the past day killed one person in Sloviansk, Donetsk region, and injured at least 47 people across seven regions, including 17 in Dnipropetrovsk region. The energy company DTEK said three of its workers were injured and that it introduced emergency power cuts in Kyiv. The Kyiv Independent reported that a Russian airstrike destroyed the Kramatorsk city council building.

Russia’s Defence Ministry said its forces downed 235 Ukrainian drones over Russian regions overnight.

Background: Russia began its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Both sides have struck each other’s energy facilities, and Russian attacks on Ukraine’s grid have intensified ahead of winter. For Saturday’s figures, see our earlier report.
