Russian drone strike on Dnipro railway station platform kills at least 14, Ukrainian officials say; daytime attacks also hit Chernihiv and Kremenchuk

Ukrainian authorities said a jet-powered Russian drone hit a platform at Dnipro's main station on Thursday as a train was preparing to leave for Zaporizhzhia. Officials also reported deaths in Chernihiv and Kremenchuk. President Volodymyr Zelensky called the strike 'horrific', and French President Emmanuel Macron said a local ceasefire was not enough.

A Russian jet-powered drone hit a platform at the main railway station in Dnipro, central Ukraine, on Thursday 29 October, killing at least 14 people and injuring at least 14, Ukrainian officials said, as of about 17:10 GMT. Dnipropetrovsk regional governor Oleksandr Hanzha said six of the injured were in critical condition, including an 11-year-old boy, Al Jazeera reported. The Associated Press, citing officials earlier in the day, gave a toll of 13 dead.

State rail company Ukrzaliznytsia said a train was preparing to leave for Zaporizhzhia when the platform was hit, at around 09:00 GMT. Ukraine’s air force said four drones were launched at Dnipro and three were shot down. Rail chief Oleksandr Pertsovsky said a heightened threat level had been announced, “but unfortunately there were still a large number of people on the platform”, AFP reported.

Zelensky called it a “horrific Russian attack” and said the drone hit a platform where a commuter train and a passenger train were standing. He also criticised the recent US easing of some sanctions on Russia. Macron wrote that “we must aspire to far more than a localized ceasefire” like the one in Oleshky.

Officials said Russian missiles struck central Chernihiv, killing two 15-year-old girls, and that a drone hit an apartment building in Kremenchuk, killing at least three people, according to The Kyiv Independent.

Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. The strikes came during a six-day local ceasefire around Russian-occupied Oleshky and ahead of planned US-mediated talks between Russia, Ukraine and the United States.
