Christiane Amanpour, CNN’s chief international anchor, said on Monday 19 October (US time) that she will leave the network in June 2027, after 43 years there.

“After many months of thought and a few sleepless nights, I have decided to separate from CNN, my partner of 43 fantastic years!” Amanpour, 68, said in a statement. She said she looks forward to “interesting new projects down the line”.

CNN chairman Mark Thompson announced the decision in a memo to staff. “Christiane has thought carefully about this decision, and she and I have been discussing it for some months,” he wrote, describing her as “one of the most trusted and beloved journalists anywhere”.

Amanpour joined CNN in 1983 as an assistant on the international news desk, the BBC reported. Her assignments included the first Gulf War, the Bosnian war, Rwanda, Afghanistan, Ukraine and Iran, she said in her statement. She has hosted her own nightly interview programme on CNN International since 2009.

According to CNN, the programme, which she scaled back to a few days a week in January 2025, will become weekly in January 2027 and end in May. She will keep reporting for CNN until June. Her PBS programme, “Amanpour & Company”, will end in December. Amanpour said she will continue her podcast “The Ex Files” with her former husband, Jamie Rubin.
