Glee to return as Disney+ and Hulu order a revival series

The new series comes from 20th Television, which produced the original 2009-2015 Fox show. Disney announced no cast or producers; co-creator Ryan Murphy said in September he had written a script with Brad Falchuk and Ian Brennan.

Disney+ and Hulu have ordered a revival of Glee, the musical comedy-drama that ran for six seasons on Fox from 2009 to 2015, Disney announced on Wednesday 21 October. The new series comes from 20th Television, which produced the original.

Disney’s announcement named no cast members or producers, The Hollywood Reporter and Deadline reported. Co-creator Ryan Murphy told Entertainment Tonight in September that he had finished a script with co-creators Brad Falchuk and Ian Brennan, and that he had been in touch with “around 10 of the original cast members”.

Two original cast members have since posted about returning. Chord Overstreet, who played Sam Evans, wrote “Reunited and it feels so good” on X, and Heather Morris, who played Brittany S. Pierce, said on Instagram that her character was “back for more”, Rolling Stone reported.

Glee followed the members of a high-school show choir in Lima, Ohio, and featured musical performances in every episode. Its cast included Lea Michele, Matthew Morrison, Jane Lynch, Chris Colfer, Kevin McHale, Amber Riley, Dianna Agron, Darren Criss, Cory Monteith and Naya Rivera. Monteith died in 2013 and Rivera in 2020.

The series won six Emmy awards, including for Murphy’s direction of the pilot and for Lynch as supporting actress. It streams on Hulu, and Disney said its songs draw about 4 million monthly listeners on Spotify.
