Oracle to offer Google's TPU AI chips in its cloud from 2027, the first provider outside Google to do so
Oracle and Google said Google's Tensor Processing Units will be available through Oracle Cloud Infrastructure from 2027. Oracle also said it will add OpenAI's Jalapeño chip and Cerebras hardware, and bring ChatGPT and Codex into its business applications.
Oracle and Google said on Tuesday 27 October that Google’s Tensor Processing Units (TPUs), its in-house AI chips, will be available through Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI). The companies said it is the first time Google’s TPUs will be offered on a large cloud platform outside Google.
The announcement was made at Oracle’s AI World conference in Las Vegas. Oracle said Google TPUs on OCI will be available in calendar year 2027 and will ramp up over several years, and that it will host Google’s eighth-generation chips, the TPU 8t for training AI models and the TPU 8i for running them.
“Different AI workloads have different compute needs,” said Mahesh Thiagarajan, president of Oracle Cloud Infrastructure. Amin Vahdat, Google’s chief technologist for AI and infrastructure, said the arrangement would give “more organizations access to this technology”.
Oracle also said it will offer OpenAI’s Jalapeño chip and hardware from Cerebras on OCI, and that it is bringing OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Codex into its business applications, CNBC reported. Asked whether the move signals a shift away from Nvidia, Thiagarajan told CNBC it did not, calling Nvidia’s chips “the best, most fungible”.
Oracle shares rose nearly 5% on Tuesday and Cerebras shares about 8%, according to CNBC. Oracle shares are down more than 30% this year, CNBC reported.
