Israeli strikes kill seven in Gaza, rescuers say; Israel says it killed a senior Hamas security official
Gaza's civil defence and hospitals said Israeli strikes in central and northern Gaza and Gaza City killed seven people on Tuesday, including Akram Yassin and his wife. Israel's military said Yassin was a senior official in Hamas's general security apparatus.
Israeli strikes at several locations in the Gaza Strip killed seven Palestinians on Tuesday 20 October, according to Gaza’s civil defence service and several hospitals, AFP reported.
Civil defence spokesperson Mahmoud Bassal and Al-Aqsa Martyrs’ Hospital said two men were killed in strikes in Al-Zawaida and the Wadi Gaza area in central Gaza. One person was killed in Jabalia al-Balad in the north, and Al-Shifa Hospital said it received another victim from the Zeitoun neighbourhood. Al-Shifa said a man and a woman, whom it named as Akram Yassin and his wife, were killed in a strike on a residential block in the Al-Rimal neighbourhood of Gaza City. Nasser Hospital said a teenager was killed by Israeli gunfire south of Khan Younis.
The Israeli military said it had killed “Akram Bassam Shaaban Yassin, a senior official in the general security apparatus” of Hamas. It also said a strike in the Jabalia area killed a Hamas member who had taken part in the abduction of Shani Louk in the 7 October 2023 attack. It told AFP it was checking the other reports. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who faces a general election on 27 October, has said Israel will keep targeting Hamas despite the ceasefire.
Background: A US-brokered ceasefire between Israel and Hamas took effect in October 2025. Gaza’s Hamas-run health ministry, whose figures the UN considers reliable, says Israeli attacks have killed at least 1,500 people since the truce began and more than 74,450 since the war started, AFP reported. The Hamas-led attack on Israel on 7 October 2023 killed 1,221 people, according to an AFP tally of official Israeli figures.
