eBay to cut about 1,000 jobs, or 9% of its workforce, in second round of layoffs this year
The online marketplace said it was aligning its teams with its top priorities, after cutting about 800 jobs in February.
eBay will lay off about 9% of its workforce, or roughly 1,000 employees, a company spokesperson confirmed to CNBC on Wednesday 21 October. Reuters first reported the cuts, citing a memo to staff from chief executive Jamie Iannone.
“This step was taken to ensure we continue to operate from a position of strength by aligning our teams and resources with our top strategic priorities,” the spokesperson said in a statement. The company said it would keep hiring in “priority areas aligned with our strategy”.
“Our strategy is working,” Iannone wrote in the memo, according to Reuters. “Continuing to capture the significant opportunity ahead requires us to make thoughtful choices about where we focus and invest.”
It is eBay’s second round of job cuts this year. In February the company cut about 6% of its workforce, or about 800 jobs. eBay had about 12,300 employees at the end of 2025, CNBC reported.
CNBC said eBay has been reducing its headcount over recent years while increasing spending on artificial intelligence. In July the company completed its US$1.4 billion cash purchase of clothing resale platform Depop from Etsy.
eBay shares were up about 1% on Wednesday morning in New York, CNBC reported.
