Some current and prospective investors in Anthropic’s planned share sale are weighing a lower valuation for the artificial intelligence company, Reuters reported on Thursday 15 October (US time), citing four people familiar with the matter.

According to the report, some investors who attended Anthropic’s investor day in San Francisco on Wednesday discussed a valuation of around $US1.5 trillion. Investors had previously expected about $2 trillion for the listing, which is planned for November.

At the meeting, Anthropic told prospective investors that third-quarter revenue rose 45% from the previous quarter to $16.8 billion and that it was profitable on an adjusted basis, Reuters reported. The sources said some investors were disappointed that growth had slowed: revenue more than doubled between the first and second quarters, to $11.6 billion.

Anthropic did not immediately respond to Reuters’ request for comment.

The report came during a week of falling share prices for AI-related companies. A separate Reuters market report on Friday said concerns about how the AI build-out is being financed weighed on technology stocks, and cited the Anthropic valuation report as adding to those concerns.

Reuters also reported that Anthropic has committed to spending at least $518 billion over a decade on cloud services, computing and infrastructure.
